PhD degree-seeking students

There are no tuition fees for PhD students. In addition, scholarships have been established for international students who wish to enroll for an accredited doctoral programme leading to a PhD degree in the following fields:

  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Materials Technology
  • Environmental Technology
  • Biotechnology
  • Power Engineering
  • Health

Eligibility requirements
  • The candidate must reside in a country other than Estonia and must possess a degree that entitles him/her to be admitted to doctoral studies.
  • The candidate must not be enrolled as a student in a higher education institution of Estonia when the application is submitted, and must not, during the preceding three years, have resided in Estonia for a period exceeding one year.
  • The candidate should not have a research experience of more than four years.
  • The candidate must take up residence in Estonia for the period of studies and must complete the degree at the Estonian university to which the grant was released.

The grant application must be submitted by the host university on behalf of the candidate.

Funding arrangements

  • Funds for the tuition in the programme, as well as any other sums approved by the Support Scheme in relation to the student, will be issued to the host university.
  • The student will receive a monthly grant from the university (approximately 384 € ).
  • The student will receive a travel grant for one return trip home in each year of study.
  • The student will receive an additional grant to cover the cost of his/her health insurance and the stamp duty payable on residence permit.
  • In the initial year of the programme, the student will receive a supplementary relocation allowance.
