Estonian
Collection Databases

The data about old collections has been recorded in inventory books. A lot of the collections are still insufficiently studied.

The creation of computer databases started in 1993 with the support of Estonian Science Foundation. At the present a special program worked out on the basis of Sybase manages all the mineralogical collections which date before 1940. The database contains data on more than 12 000 mineral and palaeontological samples.

In 2006 the Museum of Geology of the University of Tartu joined to Estonian Earth Science Collections Information System that was developed at the Institute of Geology at Tallinn University of Technology. Electronic database (sarv.gi.ee) holds data on various geological collections and related information. Through the web interface (erast.ut.ee/geoloogia/search/index.php), most of that information from the Museum of Geology of the University of Tartu can be queried and displayed.
