The Department of Semiotics in University of Tartu was established in 1992. Since 2007, the department is a member of Faculty of Philosophy, Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics.
Semiotics as a study of communication processes (or sign processes more globally) is today one of the basic foundations for culture studies and continually more so for life sciences.
The studies in Department of Semiotics incorporate bachelor’s program, masters program and doctoral program. The main research subjects are semiotics of culture, theoretical semiotics, sociosemiotics, visual semiotics, semiotics of translation, ecosemiotics and biosemiotics.
The Tartu school of semiotics is based on the traditions of Juri Lotman and Jakob von Uexküll.
The Department belongs to the Centre of Excellence in Cultural Theory.
