Doctor's studies

Application is possible either to a state-financed study place (application deadline: 3rd of June, 2013), or to a non-state financed study place (application period: throughout the year). In either cases there is no tuition fee. The state-financed study place will provide a stipend of 383, 47 EUR/month by the University of Tartu. However, there is usually very high competition for the state-financed study place.

For admission, a doctoral thesis project is required. When preparing it, a candidate is required to consult the potential supervisor from the Department of Semiotics (K. Kull, P. Torop, M. Lotman, T. Maran, A. Randviir, U. Parli, J. Grigorjeva, E. Sutiste, or A. Ventsel) who will help in preparing the project. In addition to the supervisor in Tartu, a student may have a consulting supervisor from any university of the world. Please see further information about the research done by the staff members at: /www.ut.ee/SOSE/department/staff.html (click on the names to see further links).

The candidates to a state-financed study place are expected to come to Tartu for an oral examination, which consists of the defense of the project in June or July (at the day announced ). For the study year 2013/2014 the entrance examination takes place on the 26th of June. The arrangement of the defense of the project for the candidates to a non-state financed study place will be decided on an individual basis.

In addition to the creative research environment and a fascinating group of scholars, Tartu Semiotics Department provides a series of general and special courses on various branches of semiotics in English, both from local and visiting scholars. Thus every student can find in Tartu the possibilities that in the best way can meet his or her scholarly needs.
