Dear colleague,

We are happy to inform you that we have witnessed great interest in the Ninth International Congress of Finno-Ugric Studies Congressus Nonus Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum. By the autumn of 1999 the number of pre-registered participants is close to 1,100. We have received about 500 applications for making a presentation.

The Congress will be held under the auspices of Lennart Meri, President of the Republic of Estonia.

The central topic of the Congress is
The opening ceremony will take place on August 7, 2000 at 16:00. The working days of the Congress will begin with plenary reports followed by work in sections and symposia. Enclosed with this circular is a personal notification whether your report has been included in the programme. The programme of the Congress as well as the volumes with plenary reports and abstracts will be supplied upon registration in Tartu. The closing ceremony will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2000 at 10:00. The working languages of the Congress are English, Russian, German, French, Estonian, Finnish, and Hungarian. Unfortunately, no interpreting will be available.

The participation fee
is 200 USD for participants and 100 USD for accompanying persons. The fee includes admission to all the academic and cultural events of the Congress, excursion together with lunch, as well as Congress publications and other materials. The participation fee does not include accommodation and meals. The closing date for the payment of the participation fee is March 31, 2000. Please retain a copy of the bank transfer and bring it with you when you come to the Congress. We would like to remind you of the fact that the abstracts will be published only if the participation fee has been paid. Cancellations received before July 1, 2000 will be refunded without the processing fee. Refunds cannot be guaranteed for later cancellations.

Book exibit
The participants are requested to bring or send in advance by mail publications of their institution from 1995 to 2000. In accordance with the tradition you can donate these publications to the University of Tartu at the end of the Congress.

Accommodation options are described in the enclosure. Please indicate your request for the chosen category of accommodation in the final registration form.

Thursday, August 10, 2000 is scheduled for excursions. More detailed descriptions of excursions can be found in the enclosure.

Visa requirements depend on your citizenship. Information concerning visas can be obtained from Estonian embassies and consulates. The Congress homepage provides some information about the latter.

Final registration
The present circular comes together with the final registration form. We ask you to complete it as required and  return it to the Organizing Committee. Surface mail or e-mail is recommended. Please do it before the closing date for final registration March 31, 2000.
