European Encounters: Diversity and Integration from West to East

3-30 July, 2016 (including arrival and departure dates)

The programme takes place in two coutries and three cities:
Utrecht (the Netherlands) and in Estonia: Tartu - the University town and Pärnu - the coastal "summer capital".

This 4-week joint programme on European integration in organised in co-operation between the Utrecht University’s Summer School and the International Summer University of the University of Tartu.

The programme introduces the European Union, European Institutions, (shared) foreign policy and new challenges. The programme will study both the development towards a united Europe and the enduring diversity of national policy, law and geopolitical background that the member states have to deal with in the process of European integration.

Week I-II in Utrecht - European Politics 3-17 July
Week III in Tartu - EU-Russian Relations 17-24 July
Week IV in Pärnu - Baltic Regional Security 24-30 July

Lectures and seminars in English on a variety of topics concerning social, political and economic issues will be provided by the professors of the participating universities. Special seminars and meetings with top-qualified practiciones are part of the programme, as well as visits to governmental and NGO institutions and enterprises.

Students will also benefit from a cultural programme that introduces the Netherlands and Estonian society, culture and history in a wider perspective. The students visit different museums and attend guided city walking tours.

Upon successful completion the students will receive two transcripts of records, one issued by the Utrecht University and one issued by the University of Tartu.

Programme fee: 2050 € includes tuition, accommodation (also breakfast included in Estonia), transportation during the programme between the countries (the Netherlands-Estonia) and cities, cost of the study visits, cultural and social programme and the services of the host university. Students are responsible for their travel from their home country to Utrecht and from Pärnu to their home country.
