The students admitted to the University of Tartu either pay for their studies or can receive tuition-waiver scholarship. Please check whether a particular programme has tuition waivers or is fee based - read the admission requirements of the programme you are interested in. The links below decribe the principles of these two financing options in more detail.
You have to start paying the tuition fee only if you fail to study full time. A full-time student is supposed to get 30 ECTS per semester and 60 ECTS per academic year. The payment threshold is 6 ECTS: if you get 24 ECTS by the end of semester, you do not have to pay yet. However, you need to get 54 ECTS by the end of the second semester: credit points are calculated cumulatively per semester. For the credit point price, see prices for 2015/2016 admission.
How many courses do I need to take to study free of charge?
Students can take more than 30 ECTS per semester, no fees are charged for extra courses. If you collect more than 30 credits per semester, this surplus allows you to have a semester with fewer credits to be obtained.
Tuition-waiver scholarship contract
You will sign the tuition-waiver scholarship contract at the beginning of the semester. Tuition-waiver sholarships are offered to the best applicants of most English-taught degree programmes and to all students admitted to Estonian-taught degree programmes. The tuition-waiver scholarship covers your tuition fee if you manage to study full time.
The tuition fee contracts are prepared by the dean’s offices of respective faculties. In the case of colleges, the units responsible for the contracts are central administrative offices, please consult your coordinator at the International Student Service or Programme Manager, if necessary.
The tuition-waiver scholarship contract needs to be concluded within three weeks after the student has been matriculated, that is by 20 September at the latest.
If you do not sign the tuition-waiver scholarship contract by 20 September, the university cancels the scholarship. Tuition fee will be charged on the basis of the credit point price and the number of credits to be obtained for the courses for which the student has registered. If the student has not paid the autumn semester fee by 20 October, the student will be deleted from the matriculation register.
Do I have to take courses only from my curriculum to study free of charge?
In order to be able to study free of charge, the students need to keep in mind that they are obliged to complete their curricula (including a minor specialisation, and optional courses to the maximum extent allowed). If the student takes many courses, meaning in terms of credits completed fulfils the requirement, but the courses are taken form another curriculum, the students need to pay for the missing credits (the number of credit points collected cannot fall more than six credit points short of the mandatory number of credit points to be obtained - see the blue table above).
What about the courses transferred from my previous studies with the help of RPL?
Students can have their earlier studies transferred (according to the UT regulations). Credit points obtained for earlier studies and work experiences are also counted towards the number of credit points obtained when calculating the student’s tuition fee.
Please remember that upon calculation of the student’s tuition fee, the number of credit points to be obtained is calculated only on the basis of the courses of the curriculum (and the modules chosen in the curriculum) and optional courses to the maximum extent allowed by the curriculum.
Full time students pay a semester fee. The deadlines for paying the tuition fee are 20 October in the autumn semester and 20 March in the spring semester. You can also pay the tuition fee as a lump sum for the entire academic year. In that case, the deadline is 20 October.

If you do not sign the tuition fee contract by 20 September, and do not submit an application for deletion from the university’s matriculation register, the university will charge the tuition fee on the basis of the credit point price and the number of credit points to be obtained for the courses for which the student has registered.
If you cancel the studies before 20 October, you are not required to pay the tuition fee. If you cancel the studies after the payment deadline (20 October), you must pay the tuition fee of the current semester.
