After the Empire: the Collapse of Communism and Beyond 2-week programme

3-16 July, 2016 (with arrival and departure dates)

The programme is a joint course offered by two leading universities:

  • University of Tartu - established in 1632 and one of the most well-known and oldest universities in the Baltic Sea area;
  • University of Latvia - established in 1919 and listed as one of the leading universities in Latvia;

in Latvia and Estonia in two capitals: Riga and Tallinn.

The aim of this programme is to introduce the crucial changes in two Baltic societies, brought up by the collapse of communism. The programme will introduce the challenges and achievements of social, economic and political reforms and their past, present and future impacts on local as well as on international scale. Students will learn of state-of-the-art achievements generated by quick and efficient transformation from state-controlled economic system into free market economy.

Week I in Riga - Latvia: Society, Politics and Economy 3-10 July
Week II in Tallinn - Estonian Business Environment 10-16 July

In addition to the above described lectures and seminars - all delivered by professors with high international standing from both universities - the programme includes study visits to parliaments, governmental and public institutions, as well as to local non-governmental sector.

In both countries the students will also benefit from a cultural programme that introduces Latvian and Estonian society, culture and history in a wider perspective. The students visit different museums, attend guided city walking tours and nature park.

Upon successful completion the participants will receive the Certificate of Completion and an Academic Transcript of the University of Tartu.

Application deadline: 20 May, 2016. Online application system opens in December 2015.
Programme fee: 1590  includes tuition, accommodation with breakfast, transportation during the programme between the countries (Latvia-Estonia) and cities, cost of the study visits, cultural and social programme and the services of the host university. Housing costs constitute 455 € of the programme fee. Students are responsible for their travel from their home country to Riga and from Tallinn to their home country.
