You can apply for academic leave once per stage of study. Academic leave requested by you must be an uninterrupted period. You cannot apply for academic leave for 6 months, then study for a semester and then apply for academic leave for 6 months again.
You cannot apply for academic leave at your own request in the first semester of the first year.
You need to specify the duration of the academic leave in the application. You can choose the length of the period. You can go on academic leave at your own request for up to one year. If you have taken the academic leave for a shorter period, you can apply for the extension of the leave for up to one year before the expiry of the leave.
You can go on academic leave at any time within the nominal period of study. Please keep in mind that when taking academic leave at the time when you have studied a half or more than a half of a given semester, the semester is considered "studied semester" and you are expected to complete 30 ECTS by the end of the semester. It is therefore advised to take academic leave for a semester or academic year, as this enables to continue the studies, after academic leave, in the most structured and best way.You cannot go on academic leave during the extension of your study period and academic leave is not formalised retroactively.
While on academic leave, you do not have the health insurance arising from your student status.
Academic leave for health reasons
You can apply for academic leave for health reasons at any time on the basis of a medical certificate. Your application needs to be accompanied by a medical certificate on which the doctor has determined the duration of your academic leave.
You can go on academic leave for health reasons several times, but the total duration of the leave must not exceed 2 years.
Academic leave upon commencement of service in the Defence Forces
If you are called upon to perform compulsory military service, the Defence Resources Board will send you a notice calling you up. On the basis of this notice and an application you can go on academic leave for up to one year.
Academic leave due to caring for a child
Female students have the right to apply for academic leave due to caring for a child as of the 7th month of pregnancy until one month has passed from the due date. After the birth of a child the parents can, on the basis of a copy of the birth certificate of the child, apply for academic leave lasting until the child turns three. You have to submit an appropriate application for academic leave.
Both parents (on the basis of a copy of the birth certificate / certificate of registration of the birth of the child) can go on academic leave in connection with caring for a child (after the birth of the child).
Interruption of academic leave
In order to interrupt academic leave before the final date of the academic leave, you need to submit an application for the interruption of the academic leave.
If you are on academic leave for health reasons, you need to annex a medical certificate to the application.
While on academic leave, students are not eligible to taking a loan, i.e. they cannot apply for a student loan.
Also, no study allowance is paid to students who are on academic leave.
If you have been granted study allowance and you go on academic leave, the payment of the study allowance shall be terminated as of the month of study following the last day of your studies. For example: main allowance has been granted to a student for the spring semester (from February to June) and the student goes on academic leave as of March 5. The student is paid the study allowance for February and March, but in April the student will not receive the study allowance anymore.
If a student who went on academic leave returns from academic leave in the same semester in which the study allowance was granted to the student, the payment of the study allowance will resume as of the month following the date of cessation of the academic leave. For example: main allowance has been granted to a student for the spring semester (from February to June) and the student goes on academic leave from March 5 to April 30. The study allowance will be paid to the student for February and March and payment of the allowance will be continued from May to June. For further information see the Procedure for Study Allowances.
Once you go on academic leave at your own request or for health reasons, you cannot participate in studies or take examinations. For the aforementioned reasons, the university will cancel the course registrations of students who go on academic leave.
If you are on academic leave taken for the purpose of commencing service in the Defence Forces or in connection with taking care of a child, you are allowed to participate in studies. In addition, a person with a moderate, severe or profound disability is allowed to participate in studies during academic leave. To participate in studies, you must submit an application along with an application for academic leave, otherwise the university will cancel your registrations for courses.
If a student obtains a fourth negative result in the same course (or a third negative result in the Faculty of Medicine) while on academic leave, the student will be deleted from the matriculation register at the end of the semester.
The tuition fees for the standard period of study and for the time spent on academic leave are calculated separately and the amount of the fees depends on the time of going on academic leave:
The due date of the tuition fee in the autumn semester is October 20 and in the spring semester March 20.
The payment of tuition fees while on academic leave is regulated by the Conditions of Compensation of Study Expenses in Formal Education.
