ALAR KARIS ELECTED AS THE NEW RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TARTU

The initial ballot included the following candidates: Mr Volli Kalm, UT Professor of Applied Geology, Mr Alar Karis, Rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and UT Extraordinary Professor of Developmental Biology and Ms Margit Sutrop, UT Professor of Practical Philosophy. 267 ballot papers were deposited in the ballot box, of which 1 was unmarked and none was spoiled. Prof Kalm polled 85, Prof Karis 112 and Prof Sutrop 69 votes.
The second ballot was held between Prof Volli Kalm and Prof Alar Karis. 233 ballot papers were deposited in the ballot box, 10 of which were unmarked. The voting results were as follows: Prof Volli Kalm garnered 110 votes and Prof Alar Karis received the support of 143 members of the Electoral College.
Prof Alar Karis was the sole candidate standing in the third and final ballot and he received the votes of 198 members of the Electoral College.
The Electoral Committee will recommend that the Cabinet of Ministers appoint the new Rector on July 1, 2007. The inauguration ceremony of the Rector will be held on August 31.
Prof Alar Karis was born in 1958 in Tartu. In 1981 he graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Estonian Agricultural Academy. He has also studied and worked at various universities in Germany, United Kingdom and Netherlands. Since 1999, Alar Karis has held the office of the Rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. His term in office is to expire at the end of this year.
