The Ambassador of Slovak Republic to Visit UT and to Open an Exhibition in University Library
The ambassador of Slovak Republic, Mr Dušan Krištofík will visit University of Tartu on 6th of April. He will meet the management of UT and open an exhibition in UT Library (III floor) at 3 pm.
The exhibition "Personalities of Science and Technology in Slovakia: A Historical Overview" will present 36 personalities of Slovak origin who have significantly contributed to the development of science and technology in the world.
Exhibition isorganized by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Riga, the Slovak Technical Museum in Kosice, the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava and
the University of Tartu.
The touring exhibition Personalities of Science and Technology in Slovakia: A Historical Overview is put together by the Slovak Technical Museum in Kosice and the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava widely attests to this development.
The authors of exhibition tried to introduce briefly the history of science and technology in Slovakia through its most significant representatives. Their aim was to familiarize the public with pundits of technical science, mathematics, physics, natural science, astronomy and medicine and with their results and contribution to the scientific development in the world. The exhibition consists of 36 playfully presented biographies of pioneers of science.
Among them, the most important would doubtlessly be worldly recognized Aurel Stodola, the so-called father of the steam turbine. Others´ talents from the period of 19th and the beginning of 20th century who had to win recognition abroad include: Jozef Maximilian Petzval, mathematician, professor at the University of Vienna who significantly influenced the development of optics in photography, Stefan Jedlik, physicist of world reputation who invented dynamo, Maximilan Hell, astronomer who worked as director of Vienna Observatory and many more.
The biographic information is illustrated with artifacts from the collections of the Slovak Technical Museum displayed in glass cases. The exhibition is completed with a central panel describing/presenting the milestones of science and technology in the world.
The exhibition was first shown in Bratislava and Kosice, then in various cities in Europe including Berlin, Frankfurt, Budapest, Riga, Belgrade, Sofia etc. It will be showcased at the University of Tartu Library (III floor) from 6 April until 30 April 2011.
