Electoral Commitee Confirmed the Candidates for UT Rector Position
Professors Volli Kalm, Toivo Maimets and Mart Ustav will be running for the position of the Rector of UT. Elections will take place on May 31st.
The deadline for nominating candidates for the office of the Rector ended on 7 May. Electoral Commitee confirmed professors Volli Kalm, Toivo Maimets and Mart Ustav as candidates for the position of the Rector of the University of Tartu.
The three candidates are: Toivo Maimets, Professor of Cell Biology and Director of the UT Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology; Volli Kalm, Professor of Applied Geology and Chair of Estonian Research Council; Mart Ustav, Professor of Biomedical Technology, Member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
All three professors were nominated by the Faculty of Science and Technology. In addition, Toivo Maimets was nominated by 22 professors, Mart Ustav by 26 professors and Volli Kalm by 36 professors of University of Tartu.
A public debate between the candidates will take place on 24 May at 4 pm in the University Assembly Hall. An additional debate will be organized by the UT Student Council on 22 May at 6 pm in the University Assembly Hall.
The election meeting will be held on 31 May at 12 noon in the University Assembly Hall. The Rector will be elected by a 347-member electoral college consisting of all University Council and Senate members, all members of the faculty councils, all regular professors and senior researchers. The candidate who receives the votes of at least 174 Electoral College members will be declared elected.
