ESTONIAN UNIVERSITY TO CELEBRATE ITS 86TH ANNIVERSARY

The academic lecture, titled “The Mission and Opportunities of Sport
Sciences in Contemporary Society” will be given by Prof. Mati Pääsuke,
Vice Dean of UT Faculty of Exercise and Sport Sciences.
The lecture will be followed by conferment of UT’s honorary doctorates. This year’s honorees are Prof. Stephen John Proctor of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), Prof. Emeritus Ilmar Talve of the University of Turku (Finland), Prof. Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg of the University of Basle (Switzerland) and Doctor of History Ants Viires, who will also pronounce a gratitude address on behalf of the honorees. After the conferment of honorary doctorates, doctoral diplomas will be presented to UT’s 68 fresh PhD graduates.
For the second time, the Ceremonial Meeting dedicated to the anniversary of the Estonian-language university will include the presentation of UT “Contribution to Estonian Cultural Identity” Award. The Award is intended for persons who by written or oral contribution have significantly promoted the cultural or national identity of Estonia. The nominee will receive a 50-volume book series “Estonia’s Outstanding Thinkers” and a unique glass sculpture. The name of the nominee will be divulged at the meeting; last year the award went to the writer and ethnologist Ilmar Talve.
Additional addresses will be pronounced during the meeting by Mr Georg Aher, Deputy Mayor of Tartu, Prof. Gesine Schwan of the University of Viadrina as well as Mr Joel Hirv, UT second-year student of Government and Politics.
The anniversary will continue at 5 p.m. with the Torchlight Procession departing from in front of the Vanemuine 46 study hall building. At 7 p.m. the concert titled “The Mystery of Rhythm”, dedicated to the anniversary, will start in the Assembly Hall of UT, featuring folk and jazz blends performed by Villu Veski and the students of Viljandi Culture Academy. Entrance is free and open to the public.
The traditional anniversary ball will take place on Friday, December 2 at 7 p.m. at the “Vanemuine” Concert Hall. It will give UT students, alumni and staff alike an opportunity to mix freely in the easy and elegant atmosphere created at the ball. The carrying theme of the ball for the current year is “Best Years of Your Life”, the ball is hosted by Liina and Tõnis Lukas.
The anniversary of Estonian-language university will also be celebrated at the UT Türi, Narva and Pärnu Colleges. In addition to these events, the anniversary festivities also include the presentation of UT Foundation stipends and the opening of the new Study Hall Building “Iuridicum II” in Näituse St.
