On 27 November, 14.15 Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the first female president of Latvia will deliver a lecture at the University of Tartu. As part of the international ‘Kapuściński  Development Lectures’, she will discuss the role of new EU members as donors in global development cooperation.

The lecture series launched in 2009 focuses on development issues in EU countries. In her public lecture at the University of Tartu, Vaira Vike-Freiberga discusses the role of new and potential EU member countries as donors and the impact of global economy on development cooperation relations.

The lecture ‘Emerging Donors – the Way Out Of or Into the Crisis’ is also accompanied by a panel discussion in which renowned experts discuss the opportunities and challenges of development cooperation and the role of Estonia in this area. In addition to Dr Vaira-Vike Freiberga, professor emeritus of the University of Montreal, the discussion panel includes Professor Evhen Tsybulenko, Head of Human Rights Centre of Tallinn Law School of Tallinn University of Technology, Marko Mihkelson, member of the Riigikogu, and Evelin Andrespok, Policy Officer of the Estonian Roundtable for Development Cooperation. A Kapuściński lecture was hosted in Estonia once before, when David Hulme, Professor of Development Studies of the University of Manchester, visited the University of Tartu. On that occasion, the discussion focused on the UN Millennium Development Goals and the trends in the past decade.

The Kapuscinski Development Lectures in Estonia are organised by UT Eurocollege in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and Estonian Roundtable for Development Cooperation.
