Imbi Traat, Senior Lecturer at UT was nominated as an Honorary Doctor of Umeå University
Imbi Traat, Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Statistics at the University of Tartu was promoted to Honorary Doctor of Umeå University, which is the oldest and largest university in North-Sweden. The new Honorary Doctor was crowned with a laurel wreath and she was given a golden loyalty ring together with the diploma.
When nominating her as the Honorary Doctor, the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University considered the contribution of Imbi Traat to be very important to the establishment and development of a new field of study, statistical methods for sample surveys in Estonia, as well as initiating supervision of research and doctoral theses regarding sample surveys at Umeå University. In cooperation with Umeå University, Imbi Traat turned out to be an outstanding specialist in the field of sample surveys, she contributed hard work to establishing the network of sample surveys in Baltic and Nordic countries, trained a new generation of statisticians of sample surveys in Estonia and contributed to the respective studies in other Baltic States, Belarus and Ukraine.
"The nomination of Imbi Traat as Honorary Doctor demonstrates her active international involvement in developing her field of research. It is even more important that the outstanding research has found its output in the study programme of mathematical statistics at the University of Tartu, which is definitely among the most innovative programmes on our continent," Marco Kirm, Vice Rector for Research at the University of Tartu, praised the Honorary Doctor.
Cooperation with Umeå began in 1992 when Imbi Traat visited the university for the purpose of getting acquainted with the new field of study - theory of sample surveys. This visit and further visits laid the foundation for new courses at the University of Tartu, for offering methodological support to Statistics Estonia in carrying out practical sample surveys, for training students for Statistics Estonia, for research studies with the students and for research with international cooperation partners.
Imbi Traat is the Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Statistics at UT, President of the Estonian Statistical Society, and she belongs to the editorial board of the magazine “Statistics in Transition”. Traat is a selected member of the International Statistics Institute (ISI) and she is the representative of Estonia in the International Association of Survey Statisticians (IASS).
Traat’s main direction of research over the last 20 years has been theory of sample surveys. Traat has been a supervisor for numerous BA and MA theses in this field, several of which have won award-winning places, including two international Cochran-Hansen Prizes. She has been a supervisor for doctoral theses in Estonia, Finland and Sweden, as well as serving as opponent and member of defence committees.
