IX ACADEMICA WEEK TO FOCUS ON NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The public lecture will be held by Prof Dieter Langewiesche, Head of the Department of Modern History of the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Tübingen, Germany. The lecture will be preceded by welcome addresses from Ms Heli Aru, Advisor to the Minister for Education and Research, His Excellency Mr Julius Bobinger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Estonia and Mr Jochen Kirchhoff, representative of the federal state of North Rhine -- Westphalia Employers’ Association, also Estonia’s Honorary Consul in Düsseldorf and a sponsor of the week.

At 4 p.m., the discussion on English-language university in Germany and Estonia will resume. Ms Lea Kivi, member of the Organising Committee of the week, expects an exciting exchange, since the topic is currently the object of heated debates in Estonia, with radically opposing views represented. “It will be interesting to hear how these issues of language and national identity are treated in Germany,” Ms Kivi observed.
After the discussion, Prof Margit Sutrop, Head of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics, Head of the UT Department of Philosophy will present the proceedings of the VIII Academica.
An information day of the German Embassy to Estonia will also take place in UT Main Building on Monday, September 26, featuring presentations about the German culture and economy as well as the possibilities for study and educational bursaries in Germany.

For Tuesday, 27 September, the programme foresees a variety of lectures and seminars in different UT faculties. On the same day, a meeting of German and Estonian students will be organised on the premises of the Foundation Domus Dorpatensis.

The aim of the German-Estonian Academic Week is to create opportunities for contact between German and Estonian researchers and offer students lectures from reputed German scholars.
The idea for the week arose in 1995 and, thanks to enthusiastic organisers and supporters, quickly won wide popularity. The activities of the ninth successive German-Estonian academic week will conclude on 28 September.
