The rector of University of Turku, Mr Keijo Virtanen to give a next public lecture in Granö Lectures series

The Rector of University of Turku and Professor of Cultural History, Mr Keijo Virtanen, will hold a public lecture entitled "The new challenges for the University of Turku: the new university legislation in Finland and Turku as the European Capital of Culture" as part of the Granö Lectures series. The lecture will be held on May 5th at 4 pm in UT History Museum.

In his lecture, Professor Virtanen will draft the impact that the new university law has on the everyday function of the Finnish universities. There is more autonomy than ever before when it comes down to fund-raising, business activities etc. The question is how it influences the basic research and higher education in general in a comprehensive institution as the University of Turku.

Prof Virtanen will also focus on university's contribution to the European Capital of Culture project, which has triggered several research projects within UT in order to analyse and strengthen our understanding on the year as a culture capital. All this can be regarded as universities' immediate impact on the surrounding community, which (according to the new law) is the "third task" of the universities besides research and education.

Professor Keijo Virtanen has served University of Turku since 1969, both as a historian and a rector (since 1997). He has been elected back as a rector of UT whole three times. He has been appointed Honorary Consul of Estonia in the Southwest Finland. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Klaipeda (Lithuania) and the University of Tartu.

Granö Lectures are a series of public lectures and seminars held by Finnish professors and scientists at the University of Tartu. Granö lectures are organized by the Finnish Institute in Estonia, The University of Tartu and the Granö Centre of the Universities of Turku and Tartu since 2004. Granö Centre promotes the scientific and cultural exchange and collaboration between Finland and Estonia, and the Granö lectures are a part of this exchange. The lecture series is named in honour of Johannes Gabriel Granö, former rector of the University of Turku and Professor of Geography at the University of Tartu (1919−1923). This year Professor Keijo Virtanen will have honour of giving the 20th Granö lecture.

The Finnish institute in Estonia offers a full list of the Granö lectures, and University of Tartu has a database of the recorded lectures.

The lecture will held be in English. Everybody is welcome!
