The Senate of Tartu University agreed four faculties
The Senate today discussed the names for academic units as suggested by the Council. Three names were suggested, but none of them gained enough favour from the Senate members for the changes to be enforced in the University’s statutes. The decision taken on the 30th of May will be enforced – Tartu University will have four faculties as of 1st January 2016.
The version where institutes could use the word “faculty” in their name met with no support as did the idea of making the faculties’ names longer, i.e. Faculty of Law and Social Studies. Creating areas of study instead of faculties was supported by 7 members of the Senate, however 15 votes are needed for this to be enforced.
Senate also specified paragraph 15, section 16 of the statutes, where the competences of the rector are stated. Rector has the right to make decisions concerning general questions connected to the university’s activities, which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Senate or the Council. This specification will exclude the potential false interpretation that the rector could decide on questions under the jurisdiction of faculties, institutes and colleges.
Professor Volli Kalm, the chairman of the Senate and the university’s rector said that the advantage of Tartu University is its chance to build a modern university on a foundation of 400 years’ history. “History and traditions are a part of Tartu University’s values and I am glad the Council and the Senate take the fears concerning the identities of faculties seriously. The Senate discussed alternatives today, but decided to maintain the decision taken in May, which sees the university’s development as a whole.”
University’s council supported the management and structural reform, the confirmation of the statutes will be decided before the 30th of June 2014.
If the Council adopts the new statutes, University of Tartu will comprise four faculties as of the 1st of January 2016: Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Natural Sciences. The names and statutes of academic units within the faculties will be confirmed by the end of summer 2015.
