State decoration given to five people associated with the University of Tartu
On the eve of the 96th Independence Day of the Republic of Estonia, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves honours 99 people with a decoration for services rendered to Estonia. The receivers include several people linked to the University of Tartu.
According to llves, the highest form of appreciation in Estonia is attributed to people from different walks of life here and abroad, whose daily commitment to their work, calling and thus the improvement of life in Estonia deserves acknowledgement on state level. “The stories of the virtue of these people collectively depict an Estonia growing up”, the Office of the President mediates.
Five people from the University of Tartu are acknowledged:
Order of the White Star, Third Class
Anzori Barkalaja – a promoter of education, director of the Viljandi Culture Academy
Anzori Barkalaja shared the acknowledgement received with the order with the entire staff of the academy: „This is basically an acknowledgement of the entire Viljandi Culture Academy and the activities fostered here.”
Order of the White Star, Fourth Class
Alvo Aabloo – researcher of materials science, populariser of robotics, professor at the University of Tartu
Jaak Kikas – researcher in physics, professor at the University of Tartu
“This is a happy and unexpected event. It is all the happier because through this award, all activities have tried to promote are also acknowledged – the popularisation of science and subject competitions in physics – with the ultimate goal of a finding a better understanding and mutual support between science and the society,” said Jaak Kikas and forwarded his appreciation to all people he has had the joy of working together for the fulfilment of this goal.

Arne Lepp – anatomist, a promoter of medical education, writer of the textbook “Inimese anatoomia” (“Human Anatomy”), professor emeritus at the University of Tartu
