SWEDISH AMBASSADOR RECEIVES SKYTTE MEDAL

HE Mr. Dag Hartelius, Ambassador of Sweden to Estonia, was awarded the annual Skytte Medal for his continuous support in maintaining the tradition of teaching the Swedish language and culture at the University of Tartu.

The Medal was handed over to the Ambassador by Rector Alar Karis at the festive meeting held on 25 March in the University History Museum on the occasion of Skytte Day - commemorating the first chancellor of the University of Tartu, Johan Skytte.

“Throughout 2007, Dag Hartelius’ assistance was invaluable in organising the University’s 375th anniversary celebrations. During his term as Ambassador he has supported the teaching of Scandinavian languages and literatures at the University of Tartu,” Rector Karis commented the decision of the UT Academic Council.

Johan Skytte (1577−1645) was tutor and later advisor to the Swedish King Gustavus II Adolphus. While serving as Governor-General of the provinces of Livonia, Carelia and Ingria (1629-1632), he was the main initiator of the founding of the university in Tartu. The medal named after him is awarded annually to a public figure or a statesman who, during the previous year, has made a large contribution to the development of the University of Tartu and Estonian higher education in general.

The University of Tartu celebrates Johan Skytte Day, marking the anniversary of Skytte’s death, since 1995. Apart from Estonian politicians and public figures, the list of past medal recipients includes a number of foreign representatives to Estonia. Other Ambassadors who have received the Skytte Medal are Katarina Brodin (Sweden), Jacques Faure (France), Kai Lie (Norway), and Sven Roed Nielsen (Denmark).
