The Symphony Orchestra of Gießen University to Perfom at UT

The Symphony Orchestra of the University of Gießen represents a total of 90 musicians, among whom are students, alumni and university employees. The performance in Tartu will be given by a 55-member orchestra. The orchestra presents 2-3 full symphony concerts each year, and its members also give chamber music concerts and perform at academic ceremonies of the university. The orchestra has an extensive repertoire, from which they propose the audience in Tartu a fresh rendition of Austrian and German classics (Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert).

The mission of the orchestra is to use music as a means of communicating with different cultures. Members of the orchestra believe that music is capable of transcending linguistic barriers and, in addition to the hearts of the orchestra members, will also touch those of the audience.

The University of Gießen is an ERASMUS partner of the UT Faculties of Law and of Social Sciences, and the University of Tartu already hosts a guest lecturer from the Faculty of Law of the University of Gießen. The Tartu performance of the symphony orchestra will serve to cement the ties between the two universities even more. “This visit is a good example of how the cooperation agreement between our universities has fertilised the ground for cultural contacts,” said Karoliina Vilimaa-Pennarun, UT International Relations Specialist.
