UNIVERSITY PROVIDES CHILDCARE SERVICE TO STUDENTS AND STAFF
25.03.2008
The University of Tartu signed a cooperation memorandum for opening a private childcare center, Terake, within the premises of the UT Tähe Street building. Renovation has already begun and the first children will be welcome from 15 May. Young student parents unanimously welcomed the news, and memorandum partners are also very pleased.
“The aim is to allow parents with small kids at home to use professional childcare while taking an exam or attending a lecture. The initiative came from the Student Foundation, the university helped to find the premises, and the Tartu Private Education Development Society will take care of providing childcare services. Such cooperation will make the childcare service possible”, commented UT Rector Alar Karis.
The Head of the Student Foundation, Priit Lomp, admitted that the need for the childcare service has been discussed for some years now. All but one of the 114 student parents who were on academic leave in connection with childbirth last year and participated in the survey were extremely happy about the availability of childcare.
“Many of the members of university staff who currently stay at home with kids might also be interested in coming back to work with at least a partial workload”, continued Lomp. “Childcare would be a great help here.”
Terake can host 30 kids and is open to other Tartu citizens as well. University of Tartu students and staff are offered the service at a special price.
