University of Tartu Admits Nearly Twice as many International Master’s Students as in 2009

In 2010, the University of Tartu has enrolled 129 international students to its international Master’s programmes. This represents an increase of 52 over the corresponding figure of 77 from 2009. The total number of applications that met the requirements and were considered by the university was 198.

The international Master’s programmes of the university received 198 applications from all over the world. The countries from which the largest number of applications were submitted were the US, Turkey, Latvia and Pakistan. The most attractive was the programme of Software Engineering offered jointly by the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology – it was applied for by 81 student candidates of whom 33 were admitted.

“Interest in our international programmes is on the rise. The reason for this is partly the fact that recognition of the University of Tartu as an international university has grown,“ commented Ülle Tensing, the university’s senior specialist for international studies.

In the academic year 2010, the University of Tartu offers international students the opportunity of pursuing seven English-language programmes of Master’s studies: Semiotics, Applied Measurement Science, Software Engineering, Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, Cyber Defence, and Materials and Processes in Sustainable Energetics. Admissions to the last two are organised by the Tallinn University of Technology, the coordinating institution of the programme.

A total of 760 applications were submitted by international student candidates for UT programmes of Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral studies. Of these, 341 met the relevant requirements and were admitted for consideration.

All in all, over 1600 expressions of interest to study at the University of Tartu were registered in the university’s electronic admissions system for international students.
