University of Tartu to celebrate 88th anniversary of Estonian-language university

The opening address of the meeting will be by the Rector, Professor Alar Karis. Salutatory addresses will be pronounced by Dr Ene Ergma, Speaker of the Parliament, Professor Alan Roy Katritzky, Honorary Doctor of the University of Tartu, Mr Urmas Kruuse, Mayor of Tartu and Ms Marju Himma, student of folklore at the University of Tartu. Dr Tõnu Kollo, Professor of Mathematical Statistics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, will give an anniversary lecture entitled "History obliges and guides us".
The degree of Honorary Doctor of the University of Tartu will be conferred on Professor Christian von Bar (University of Osnabrück), Professor Torkel Jansson (Uppsala University), Professor Marc Antrop (Gent University), Professor Alan Roy Katritzky (Florida University) and Professor Ari Kokko (Stockholm Economic University). The title of Honorary Fellow of the University of Tartu will be conferred on the University's alumnus, Estonian business leader Toomas Sildmäe. 92 PhD degrees will also be granted.
For the fourth time, the ”Contribution to Estonian National Identity” award will be presented in the meeting. The award is granted to an individual who has made a notable contribution, either by his or her written work or orally, to the national and ethnic identity of Estonians. The awardee will also receive a work of glass art and the 50 volumes published in the series ”Estonian Thought” by the Ilmamaa publishers,. The name of the recipient will be announced at the meeting. In previous years, the award has been granted to the writer and ethnologist Ilmar Talve, the composer Veljo Tormis and the academician Endel Lippmaa.

The festivities will continue with a torchlit procession, which will start at 5 p.m. in front of the academic building at 46, Vanemuise St. The ball ”Vivat crescat floreat Academia Gustaviana” will take place in the Vanemuine Concert Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at UT Student Union (Ülikooli 18B), Vanemuine Concert Hall and through Piletimaailm and Piletilevi sale networks.
The colleges of the university will celebrate the anniversary of Estonian-language university on Thursday, 29 November. On Sunday, 2 December at 5 p.m. the students of the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy will perform a free of charge concert of ethnic music ”The Khanty Craze” in the Assembly Hall of the University.
As part of the anniversary events, on 30 November at 2 p.m. in the University History Museum the University of Tartu Foundation will present to recipients the stipends and grants it has awarded. At 3 p.m. in the same venue a presentation will take place of the second instalment, entitled ”Rector Henrik Koppel”, published in the series about the Rectors of the University of Tartu.
