University of Tartu to create a monument to its founder Johan Skytte

The first prize in the idea contest for the monument and a sum of 70,000 Estonian kroon was won by the architect Tiiu Kirsipuu. Maarja Kask and Anu Põder (code word “Skytte Square“) placed second and a further three entries (“Tree“ by Terje Ojaveer, “Icon“ by Pärtel Lang and “Pillar“ by Jaak Soans) received mention.

According to UT Director of Estates Management Riho Illak, the Chair of the contest committee, the winning entry is an excellent fit for the space between the University’s History Museum and the Supreme Court Building on the Toome Hill. “Our aim is to create a monument that would constitute a fitting reflection of the activities of Johan Skytte, a person who left his mark on both the sphere of education and the judiciary. It was on Skytte’s initiative that the University of Tartu was founded; it was he who arranged for the establishment and official status of the county courts and the royal court in Tartu, and it was thanks to him that the documents produced by the courts of the region have for centuries been impressed with the official seal of authority,“ Mr Illak explained.

The entry that won the most popularity with the city’s residents was “Skytte Square”, followed by “The Seal”. The poll was conducted on the Internet and at the University History Museum.
