UNIVERSITY OF TARTU TO HOST A MEETING OF RECTORS OF LEADING EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES

The three days of the event will include a meeting of the Rectors of Coimbra member universities, the meetings of eight task forces, the General Assembly of the Group and a public seminar titled “International Ranking of Universities” featuring four prominent speakers and calling for debate on intriguing questions related to the ranking of universities.

The topic for the Rectors’ meeting, “Are European Universities Lagging Behind?” promises a lively exchange of views regarding the possibility of European universities falling back in their development. The Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to present UT as well as the entire Estonian research and higher education system to leading universities’ Rectors and other speakers gathering for the event.

According to UT Rector Prof. Jaak Aaviksoo, Coimbra Group is one of the two important organisations (the other one being the European University Association) membership in which allows UT to be part of high-level discussions on research and education policy as well as future directions for action. UT was admitted as Coimbra member in 2003; in 2005, Prof. Ain Heinaru, UT Vice Rector for Research was elected to the network’s Executive Board.

The Coimbra Group, established in 1985, brings together 37 top universities from Europe. It includes the world’s oldest, the University of Bologna (Italy), founded in 1088, as well as such heavyweight universities as Cambridge and Oxford (UK), Lyon (France), Barcelona (Spain), Uppsala (Sweden), Leuven (Belgium), etc.
Over the years the Group has established a remarkable reputation and become an important discussion partner for the European Commission.
