University of Tartu to mark its 375th anniversary with series of festive events

The University has also invited the rectors of UT partner universities, the rectors of venerable European research universities belonging to the Coimbra Group, Cabinet Ministers, honorary fellows of the University, rectors of Estonian universities and many other important political and cultural figures.
On Thursday, 4th October at 10 a.m. a scientific conference entitled "Early Modern University Idea and the University of Tartu" will begin in the University of Tartu History Museum on Toome Hill. The papers and discussion at the conference will focus on the changes in the role of the University during the early modern period. The conference will be opened by Rector Alar Karis. At 4 p.m. plaques will be unveiled to mark the initial locations of the University of Tartu, on the slope of the Toome Hill facing Jakobi Street and on the building at 8 Jaani Street.
At 8 p.m. a historical performance about the founding of the University will take place, based on a manuscript of Mart Kivastik, directed by Ain Mäeots and entitled "The King's Last Battle and the Beginning of the University". The cast includes Jan Uuspõld, Ott Sepp, Jüri Lumiste, Liina Tennosaar, Rein Pakk and Margus Jaanovitš. The public can watch a live broadcast of the performance on a screen erected in front of the Main Building of the University. The performance will be followed by a torchlit procession from St. John's Church to the Toome Hill where, in the ruins of the Dome Cathedral, a mystery directed by Oleg Titov will be performed. The artistic direction of the evening is entrusted to the theatrical director Kalju Komissarov. The events will be broadcast live by the national television channel ETV.
On Friday, 5th October at 10 a.m. a religious service dedicated to the 375th anniversary of the University will be held in St. John's Church of Tartu, conducted by Minister Urmas Pett of the University of Tartu—St.John's congregation of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
At 11 a.m. in front of the Supreme Court Building on Toome Hill, Rector Karis together with the Queen and the PM will unveil a monument to Johan Skytte, initiator of the University.
At 12 Noon a Ceremonial Meeting to mark the 375th anniversary will begin in the Assembly Hall of the University. The meeting includes salutatory addresses from Rector Alar Karis, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden and Urmas Kruuse, Mayor of Tartu. The anniversary lecture will be given by Dr. Mart Ustav, UT Professor of Biomedical Technology. A detailed programme of the meeting is available at: /ut375/283949. At 6 p.m., the festive concert "King Gustavus' Gala" will commence in the Vanemuine Concert Hall. The concert includes two parts, the first of which is classical and academic and the second of which is based on popular and traditional Estonian culture. The first part will feature classical music that has found wide recognition in the world, performed by the University's choirs and ensembles and by Estonia's best soloists. In the second part, the University's singers, folk bands, brass band and the folk and jazz musicians of the Viljandi Culture Academy will perform traditional Estonian folksongs, melodies and dances woven together by excerpts from runosongs. The concert will be broadcast live on the national television channel ETV.
At 8 p.m. a student concert entitled "Sõbra Building – 375th anniversary?” will begin in the Sõbra building in Kalevi Street.
On Saturday, 6th October a traditional commemoration of colleagues who have passed away will be held in the Raadi Cemetery.
At 12:30 in front of the University Library, the Mayor of Tartu will unveil a monument to the great semiotician Yuri Lotman.
