UT to Celebrate The 92nd Anniversary of Estonian-Language Education with 162 New PhDs

On December 1st, the University of Tartu celebrates the 92nd anniversary of acting as Estonia's national university and providing education in Estonian language. 162 fresh PhDs will receive their diplomas in University Assembly Hall - this is the largest number of new PhD degree holders throughout university's history.

According to UT rector, prof Alar Karis increasing the numbers of PhDs has been UT's long term goal. "I'm especially delighted that the besides the academic circles also the public and enterpreneurs have taken more and more interest in our young scientists and their work," said Karis.

The rector is the one to open the celebrations in Assembly Hall. The public lecture will held by UT human physiology professor, academic Eero Vasar. Also the name of the recipient of the University of Tartu award for significant contribution to Estonian national identity will be announced. Last year, the prize went to writer Mats Traat.

This year's UT honorary doctorates will go to Swedish jurist Erik Nerep; Finnish medical scientist, renowned liver surgeant Krister Höckstedt; Finnish historian and estophiliac Seppo Zetterberg; US biologist and professor in Swarthmore College and University of Helsinki - Scott F. Gilbert and renowned Russian pscychologist, the founder of Dubna nature, society and man research university Vladimir Zinchenko.

The celebration will continue with traditional torch light parade starting from Vanemuise 46 building at 5 pm. At 7 pm the day will be completed with traditional University Ball in Vanemuine Concert Hall.
