UT Election Committee concludes registration of candidates to stand in UT Rector’s election

Professor Volli Kalm has been nominated as a candidate by the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and by 17 UT professors jointly. Professor Alar Karis Karis has been nominated by the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Biology and Geography, the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry and the UT Institute of Technology. Professor Margit Sutrop has been nominated by the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Social Sciences and by 22 UT professors jointly.
A public debate of the candidates will take place on 24 May at 4 p.m. in the Assembly Hall of the University. The Rector’s election will be held on 31 May at 12 Noon in the same venue. The Rector will be elected by a 298-member Electoral College that consists of the members of the University Council, the members of the Councils of all UT Faculties and all regular professors of the University of Tartu. The candidate who receives the votes of at least 150 electors will be declared elected.
The Election Committee will submit a recommendation to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Estonia to appoint the new Rector as of 1st July 2007.
