UT employees and botanical garden recognised at Tartu Town Day
On 29 June, the Tartu Town Day, two University of Tartu Library employees—Olga Einasto and Ilona Smuškina—will receive the Tartu town medal for their outstanding achievements. At the ceremony, which takes place at 12 o’ clock at the Town Hall Square, the Botanical Gardens of the University of Tartu will be given the title “Beautiful Estonian Home”.
Along with Ülle Kuusik, Toomas Lepp and Jaanus Rooba, Ilona Smuškina, the marketing director of the University of Tartu Library, will receive the Tartu town medal. Smuškina is the organiser of numerous research conferences, curator of exhibitions and the member of the organising committee of the Prima Vista literature festival.
Olga Einasto, the head of office in the service department of the University of Tartu Library, is a highly–valued librarian and guide, promoter of service culture, literary life and Russian culture in Tartu and also a member of the organising committee of the Prima Vista literature festival.
The ceremony will also award the best participants of the contest “Beautiful Estonian home”. The title “Beautiful Estonian Home 2015” will be given to private residences at Eha 25 and Väike kaar 23 and the Botanical Gardens of the University of Tartu.
The evaluation committee pointed out that the botanical gardens have an important role among the public green areas of Tartu and in addition to being used for research and educational activities, it is also a pleasant environment for leisure time activities with a playing area for children.
The recent more extensive projects of the botanical gardens have been the renovation of the palm greenhouse (2014), the completion of the garden of mosses and opening the herbs and aromatic herbs department (2011).
