UT new rector Alar Karis inaugurated on 31th of August

The medal symbolising the office of the Rector was presented to Professor Karis by the President. In addition to the President and the Minister, the members of the University and the public in attendance were addressed by Professor Tõnu Lehtsaar, former Acting Rector of the University, and Professor Peep Sürje, Rector of the Tallinn University of Technology and Chair of the Council of Rectors of Estonian Universities. Professor Karis, rector magnificus, delivered his inauguration speech.
The inauguration ceremony was held as an open meeting of the Council of the University of Tartu. In addition to high ranked speakers, Mr Andrus Ansip, the Prime Minister of Estonia, and Ms Ene Ergma, President of Parliament, attended to the ceremony. The meeting included a performance by the Chamber Choir of the University of Tartu, conducted by Triin Koch, Director of the Choir.
