UT Scientists Won Most of The Government Research Prizes

University of Tartu sceintists have been chosen as the recipients of the Education and Research Ministry's 2012 science awards, winning a whole seven prizes out of nine.

The 40,000-euro awards recognizing achievements in long-term research went to UT scientists Ülo Lumiste and Heidi-Ingrid Maaroos.

Lumiste is UT Professor Emeritus and one of Estonia's most distinguished mathematicians, having conducted important research since the 1950s. He specializes in differential geometry.

Maaroos is a doctor who specializes in gastroenterology. Her breakthrough study examined the role of Helicobacter pylori in chronic gastritis and gastric ulcers. She is a Professor Emeritus in UT Faculty of Medicine.

The 20,000-euro awards for the best research work of the last four years were given to UT scientists Mart Loog, Kai Kisand, Ülo Mander and Kalle Kirsimäe, Jaan Liira and Eiki Berg.

The awards will be handed over on Independence Day, February 24th in University of Tartu Assembly Hall.
