UT STUDENTS TO TAKE PART IN “ROBOTEX” ROBOT CONTEST

To participate in the contest, held for the fifth consecutive year, each team must present a robot that is capable of moving through a three-storeyed contest area and, within 10 minutes, rescuing a teddy bear from the highest storey. The team whose robot earns the most points from the jury will be declared contest winner.
The contest will be moderated by Peeter Marvet and the jury led by Maarja Kruusmaa of the University of Tartu Institute of Technology.

Mr Alvo Aabloo, coach of the UT team, explained the purpose of the contest as follows: "The aim of Robotex is to popularise the achievements of mechatronics and robotronics, especially among students and pupils, as well as the University's partners from the business and research sectors. Unlike the previous years, however, the 2005 Robotex will be based on the tasks of the international Robocup Junior Rescue competition. These have been modified to include moving between different storeys of the competition structure and are suitable for high school pupils, yet not too simple for experienced robot builders wishing to earn maximum points.”
Mr Aabloo expects close to 15 teams to present their robots at the contest. He also said that the organisers are hoping to see other high-school, company and international university teams announcing their entrance in the contest in the coming years.

The first Robotex took place in 2001 as a competition between UT and TUT teams. In 2003 the contest gained an international dimension as the UT, TUT and IT College teams were challenged by robot builders from Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology, the largest technology university in the Nordic countries.
The contest is sponsored by the Tallinn University of Technology and its Spinno project, as well as UT and the plc A le Coq brewery. Entrance is free and open to the public.

Robotex 2005 timetable:
13.00 - Opening words, contestants draw lots to determine the robots' order of appearance
13.10 - Explanation of the task and the rules of the contest by Mart Tamre of TUT
