UT in World's Top 1% for Engineering

According to the reknowned ESI (Essential Science Indicators) database, Univeristy Tartu is among the world's top 1 percent in Engineering - the first Estonian uni to reach so high in technology field.

UT rector prof Alar Karis stated that it's a very pleasant news but at the same time he doesn't see UT's technological competence being exploited enough in Estonia. "Being among top 1% in Engineering should give an incouraging signal to the enterpreneurs to use more of univeristy's know-how and competence in fundamental research and transfer it into enterpreneurship. That would speed up Estonia's high tech industrial production," said Alar Karis.

The Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, prof Peeter Burk added that UT has systematically invested in technology field during the past decade and the results are out now. "Several science groups - physisists, material scientists, geographers, computer scientsists etc - have consistantly broadened their research fields towards tehcnical sciences. Considering UT's a continuous interest to engineering and our very good results in doctoral studies in that area, I do believe that the rise in technology field will last," Burk said.

ESI (Essential Science Indicators) database accounts for the number of articles and references when calculating the institutions influence ranking. University of Tartu has belonged to the best 1% of the world in the following fields: chemistry, clinical medicine, botany and animal sciences, environmental sciences and ecology, general social sciences; materials science, life sciences, biology and biochem and geosciences.
