The University of Tartu is on the verge of change again. External pressure to reorganise the administrative structure and funding scheme is very hard. Social scientists have to face two challenges. Firstly, coming down from the ivory tower and serving society in a way that maintains the “scientific approach”, i.e. looking for solutions to local problems on the basis of internationally recognised criteria. Secondly, mapping our professional strengths, specialising, consolidation and using the synergy from cooperation in an efficient way. I believe in strong institutes and the scientific competence of our faculty. I hope to find a balance between academic liberty and the expectations of society. I would like to be a part of implementing changes which promote adjusting the medieval universitas and academic culture to the demands of modern times in a more gentle way and which do not take us into regression. I want to contribute to creating a working environment which values the efforts of an individual and motivates to take extra steps for the benefits of cooperation.
