Read why Margus Lember is running for the dean
Margus Lember, dean candidate in the Faculty of Medicine:
I decided to run for dean based on arguments by close colleagues I value. I appreciate the viewpoints of colleagues from various institutes, clinics and the Faculty of Exercise and Sport Science and their nomination for dean candidacy. I believe that thanks to my work in the current faculty, Tartu University Hospital, and the University of Tartu and my relations with partners from the ministries, partner hospitals and the Estonian Health Insurance Fund I have enough knowledge and experience to use efficiently for the development of the new faculty at the University of Tartu. Here I would like to recall the viewpoint of my teacher, Professor Kaljo Villako, on academic governance at the university: all professors must in one way or another at some point participate in governance if their colleagues give them the mandate for it.
The university needs stability and dynamic movement simultaneously: the reforms must not harm our best asset—professional people; in teaching and research work we must be open–minded and prepared to react to external changes quickly and appropriately. The role of Estonia’s only Faculty of Medicine is to have more say and offer solutions also outside the university, especially regarding health care policies.
