Read why Tõnis Karki is running for the dean
Tõnis Karki, dean candidate in the Faculty of Medicine:
The world and the university are changing and we must move along with it. What brought us here might not carry us to the future. Ahead of us should be the area of medicina which is effective, motivates all employees and students, provides scientific and professional competence, and is formed of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Exercise and Sport Science.
In my current position I have realised and publically declared where and, more importantly, how we should move forward. I also dislike the “it should be done” mentality which is too widespread. And now colleagues and students were asking me—will you join in or join the “let someone do it” people. That is when I decided that a choice has to be made. Let’s do it!
And something personal too. I believe that replacing the Estonian name arstiteaduskond with medicina was a mistake. The university gave up one of its “crown jewels”. Many teach various fields of medicine but only the University of Tartu has medical science. Nomen est omen! It is a minor detail but I see restoring this title as a task for the future dean.
