Read why Varmo Vene is running for dean
One of the aims of the structural reform is to create strong institutes. However, neither the new Statutes of the University nor the recently approved statutes of the institutes specify what this strength means. It is clear, that strength can only derive from extending functions and responsibilities which means that the vertical roles of the university vs faculty/area vs institute have to be redistributed. The considerably bigger structural unit which is formed when the current faculties are joined into new faculties should be a university subunit which coordinates the work of the institutes, offers support services and delegates specific study and research related activities to the institutes. Meanwhile, the new faculty has to promote horizontal cooperation between institutes and integration not only within the faculty but also between the faculties.
I am running for dean to initiate and actively participate in discussions about the future of the faculty. As dean I will carry out processes which enhance the strength of the institutions and their integration.
