PhD Research Visits


International students pursuing PhD degrees at other universities are welcome to conduct research and study visits at the University of Tartu for a period of 1-10 months in any of the accredited PhD programmes regardless of speciality.

Short-term research grants

Grants are made available by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science to cover such short-term visits for a period of 1-10 months.

Eligibility requirements

1) The candidate must reside in a country other than Estonia and be enrolled in a doctoral programme at an accredited university in his/her country.

2) The candidate must not be enrolled as a student at a university in Estonia at the time of application.

3) The candidate must resume studies in the home country upon conclusion of the grant period.

Application process

If you have existing contacts within the respective faculty/department, please contact them to introduce your research topic and discuss supervision of the doctoral thesis. If you need help finding a contact and prospective supervisor, please contact International Student Service at: studyinfo [ät] ut [dot] ee To identify prospective supervisors you may turn to and search the Estonian Research Portal www.etis.ee

The actual application for the grant will be submitted by the supervisor of the University of Tartu on behalf of the candidate. Once the faculty/departments confirms your research visit you will be advised on the further application process.

Application deadline

Candidates can apply throughout an academic year and applications are reviewed monthly.Students coming from non-EU contries should send documents at least 2 months before an intended study period. It takes up to 2 months to receive a residence permit. Students coming from EU countries should send documents 1 month before the intended study period.

Grant coverage

The grants will be issued to the host university, including: a monthly grant (ca. 400 EUR/month) for the duration of the research visit; a travel grant for a return trip from the student’s home country to Estonia; a grant to cover the cost of the health insurance for the period of research visit in Estonia; and the fee payable for the residence permit application. The student will receive a supplementary relocation allowance for the duration of student's stay at the university (for rental and additional travel costs).
