Estonian Language Semester

Intensive language studies start every autumn semester. The course offered in spring semester is typically a continuation of the course in autumn. Thus visiting and exchange students can take either autumn semester only, or a complete academic year with the starting in September. Instruction is available in English and Russian (some restrictions may apply).

The University of Tartu also offers non-intensive language courses. Exchange and visiting students are encouraged to take those courses in combination with other courses and semester programmes.

1. Intensive Estonian with instruction in English
This course is designed for people with little previous knowledge of Estonian who are just beginning their studies. This course alone does not prepare students for further degree studies at the University of Tartu in programmes with instruction in Estonian: however, with diligence and additional language training advanced language proficiency can be acquired. Exchange and visiting students are welcome to take this course provided that there are places available, otherwise they are recommended to take non-intensive courses.

Spring semester: 24 ECTS

2. Intensive Estonian with instruction in Russian
This course is designed for people with little previous knowledge of Estonian who are just beginning their studies. This course alone does not prepare students for further degree studies at the University of Tartu in programmes with instruction in Estonian, but with diligence and additional language training advanced language proficiency can be acquired.
Exchange and visiting students are welcome to take this course provided that there are vacancies available, otherwise exchange students are recommended to take non-intensive courses.
