University of Tartu Art Museum
(founded in 1803)
The UT Art Museum has a history of more than two hundred years - it is the oldest museum in Estonia. The museum walls are decorated with well-preserved copies of murals from ancient Pompeii, a rare example of 19th-century interior design. An interesting contrast to the colourful murals is provided by white plaster casts of celebrated sculptures of antiquity. The museum also offers various special exhibitions, including those of rare prints from the 16th to 19th centuries, Russian orthodox icons and even modern Estonian art.
The museum is open to visitors from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guided tours for groups can be arranged by appointment also on Saturdays and Sundays.
