Becoming a User of the University’s Computer Network

Here you will find the answers to the following questions:

Who can become users of the University's computer network?

Everyone connected to the University of Tartu can become users of its computer network - staff, guests, students.

Every user will get a username and a user account so that he/she can obtain access to computer network, server services and information systems of the University.

User account will connect the personal data of the user to his/her user ID in the computer network by which the rights of the user will be determined for using the information systems and the computer network of the University.

Everyone having a username of the University's computer network will receive the following:

  • University e-mail address (userID [ät] ut [dot] ee)
  • Disk space in the University server (~90 MB), of which regular back-up copies are made
  • Access to the University's information systems and the services of its computer network according to the rights of the user

How long will the username remain valid?

The University's username will remain valid until the person has some relation with University of Tartu.

Students will get the username for one year. In case the Study Information System of the University will show that the student is still studying, the user ID will automatically be prolonged in the beginning of every new academic year.

When a student loses his/her active relationship with the University (in case of graduation, exmatriculation or termination of studies), his/her user ID will remain valid for 2 months after leaving the University, but it will not be prolonged. He/she will receive an e-mail with the relevant message and his/her user account will be locked. E-mails and files can be restored with a help of the administrator up to three months after the abovementioned message was sent. The same deadline applies for letters to be forwarded to another e-mail address.

The information on graduation or termination of studies will be sent directly through the Study Information System. In case you are still studying, but have received a message about locking the user account, please check your status under personal data in the Study Information System (studying: yes/no). In case it shows that you are "not studying", please contact someone at the Dean's Office for correction of mistakes and the Department of Information Technology Services at: Ülikooli 18 a, 2nd floor, Mon - Fri 8 am - 17 pm or send an e-mail to arvutiabi [ät] ut [dot] ee, for reopening your user account.

Staff username will remain valid until the termination of contract of employment with the University

Guests' username will remain valid until the deadline set forth during the creation of the user account.
