Connecting Your Computer with the University's Computer Network

The Rules

Connecting computers to the University's computer network has to be in conformity with The Rules for using the University's computer network. Section 9 of these Rules states the following:

9. Connecting computers with the computer network


9.1. Connecting computers with the University's computer network.
9.2. All the computers that are constantly connected with the University's computer network will be registered in the Registry kept by the departments (academic subdivisions) or by the Department of Information Technology (administrative and supportive subdivisions).
9.3. Either the head of a structural subdivision owning the computer or the computer class or the Dean will appoint responsible persons for every workplace computer or computer classes. The responsibilities of these persons are:
9.3.1. to submit correct data to the Registry and to inform about any changes in the Registry data
9.3.2. to make sure that all the rules and recommendations for using the computer are being followed
9.3.3. in case of problems, to inform the computer network staff


How can the computer be connected with the computer network?

To connect your computer with the University's computer network, that is to get an IP address for your computer you need to submit the relevant application to the network team of the Department of Information Technology. Here you will find a more detailed description on how the computer is connected to the network.

1. The user will submit an application for connecting the computer into the network. To do that, the applicant fills in the relevant web form or sends a letter to arvutiabi [ät] ut [dot] ee. You need to fill in the required fields on the web form or when sending an application directly to computer helpdesk, to answer the following questions:


1. The department
For faculties: - the faculty, institute and chair
For administrative and supportive units - line of duty and division

2. Address on which the computer is situated
Street, house, room No.

3. mac address of the computer to be connected with the network
To learn your computer's mac address (for computers with Windows2000, NT, XP operation systems) you should do the following: Open the Start menu, then the Run command. You will find the Open line on the opened window, type in cmd and click OK. Another window opens and usually the following text will be displayed: C:> . Please write route print on the same line, leaving a blank between the words. Press Enter.
For example: C:>route print

Interface list will be opened in the next window. Here you will find a 12-digit combination of letters and numbers.

This is your computer's mac address.

5. Contact details of the person using the computer
Given name and surname, e-mail address, phone number

6. Contact details of the computer administrator
Name, e-mail address and phone number. The computer administrator is a person installing programs to the computer and solving computer problems. The field needs to be filled in (or the question answered)
when such a person exists

7. The desired name for the computer
This is the name that your computer will be registered under in the University's
computer network. We recommend using the name of the computer user.


2.The application will be electronically forwarded to the network specialist at the Department of Information Techonology. To forward the application through a web form, press the "Saada" (Send) button. When applying through computer helpdesk, it will be their staff filling and forwarding the relevant application.

3. The computer network specialist will create an IP address for the new computer.

4. IT-specialist working for the relevant network part (a specialist at the Department of Information Technology or the network part employee) will connect the new computer with the University's computer network.
