The Department of Information Technology warns about using the following programs:

  • Outlook Express and Outlook for mail client (for using e-mail). In case you use Internet Explorer as a web browser, we still suggest using either Netscape Messenger, Mozilla Messenger or the University's web mail environment at https://mailhost.ut.ee for your e-mail program;
  • the Telnet program for contacting the server. Your user ID and password will be sent as open when connecting through Telnet. This means that someone could be "secretly using" this information;
  • WSFTP (Windows FTP) for transporting files. The same problem occurs with WSFTP as with using the Telnet - your password and user ID will be sent openly during the connecting process;
  • MS Word (especially Word 2000) for creating web pages. This program writes too much information in html-code;
  • the Kazaa file share program because it includes the compulsory promotion software, wasting more than 50% of your computer's resources. It may also spread many viruses. There are other file share programs, that waste your computer's resources, e.g. E-Donkey, BearShare, WinMX;
  • download accelerators (Download Accelerator, Download manager), which in reality do not accelerate the process in any way.
