Welcometo the international conference “Memory from Transdisciplinary Perspectives: Agency, Practices, and Mediations”!The Research Centre of Culture and Communication is an interdisciplinary division in the University of Tartu that aims to create a dialogue between social sciences and humanities. For this purpose, research on culture and communication is conduced, with an emphasis on methodological integration. The subject of the conference organized by RCCC, “Memory from Transdisciplinary Perspectives: Agency, Practices, and Mediations”, grew out of a current research project that deals with the aforementioned goals by researching different disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary meanings of the concept of memory as a possible umbrella term that could integrate the humanities and social sciences. The active attendance and numerous discussions created by the doctoral school organized by the RCCC from April 7 to 9, 2006, titled “Cultures of remembering: experience and interpretation of the past in changing time and space” demonstrated the actuality and relevance of the topic, as well as the necessity of transdisciplinary dialogue. Accordingly, the purpose of the conference “Memory from Transdisciplinary Perspectives: Agency, Practices, and Mediations” is to elaborate these topics and to provide an arena for critical reflections.
