Andres Soosaar is Visiting Associate Professor at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine of the University of Tartu. Starting from 1 April 2020, he also works as a Research Integrity Counsellor for the Faculty of Medicine. He offers advice and support for university members who have questions about adhering to the principles of research integrity or suspect that research integrity has been violated.
Soosaar has worked at the University of Tartu for a long time, teaching both physiology and medical philosophy. Starting from 2020, he is Visiting Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine. He also taught in the online training programme “E-Education in Research Ethics: Central and Eastern Europe” by NIH Fogarty Centre, Union College and Vilnius University. Soosaar was the chief editor of the journal Eesti Arst (Estonian Physician) in 2010–2013 and the Academic Secretary of the University of Tartu in 2015–2019.
The main directions of his research are various applications of the functionalist approach in the frontiers of philosophy and science and in bioethics, understanding the behavioural and biochemical profile of neuropeptides, the philosophical aspects of neuroscience, and ethical aspects of the doctor-patient relationship and medical databases.
Experience in research ethics
- 2004–2010 participated in the work of the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Tartu
- 2007–2014 participated in the work of the Estonian Council on Bioethics
- 2015–2019 participated in creating the Estonian Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and the instructions for applying the code at the University of Tartu
As a Research Integrity Counsellor, Andres Soosaar wishes to promote the principles of good conduct of research at the Faculty of Medicine. He hopes to organize sufficient training and sharing of knowledge as well as help to solve various questions on research ethics.
