This popular science publication gives an overview of the story of the university and student life in different periods. With its humorous interludes and funny rankings, the book gives a picture of what the 17th-century student ate and what clothes the 19th-century student wore, where the 20th-century student liked to spend time, and how far the University of Tartu alumni have reached in the science world. This will all help the 21st-century student to learn about the diverse history of the dignified university.
30 November from Vanemuine Concert Hall to the Toome Hill
The traditional torchlight procession starts in front of Vanemuine Concert Hall. The university flag and the flag of Estonia lead the procession. After the flags are the representatives of faculties, administration and support structure, as well as institutions of the university. They are followed by academic student societies in the order of seniority, and other student organisations and students.
The torchlight procession is organised as follows:
The most powerful event of the centenary celebrations, involving the whole city and the sky, is held on Toome Hill.
The magnificent light show, narrating the story of Estonia and of the university using video, laser and sound technology, was created specifically for the anniversary and is performed on the walls and towers of Tartu cathedral. The cathedral will become a time machine that takes the audience on a dreamy journey from the times of the first stone axe to the space cube.
The book is based on the photo exhibition “Get ready! One hundred faces of the University of Tartu”, which was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Estonian national university. In 2017, one of the best known portrait photographers in Estonia, Birgit Püve took photos of one hundred outstanding researchers and professors of the university with an object reflecting their work.
