Abstract: Underwater robots conventionally use vision and sonar sensors for perception purposes. Fish on the other hand also have the sense of flow, which they use for tasks such as swimming in schools and predator avoidance etc. This talk presents how the biologically-inspired sense of flow can be exploited in underwater robotics for tasks such as perception and localization. Feature extraction, place recognition and map-based localization, using flow sensing, will be presented in the talk.
