The University of Tartu and Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies are honoured to host a guest lecture by Jaap Ora on the cooperation between European Union and Asia. The open lecture “The European Union as global security provider: EU cooperation with Asia on security and defence” will be held on the 23rd of March at 12:15 in the institute of political studies, Lossi 36-305
In May 2018 the Foreign Affairs Council took an important step by declaring the ambition of the EU to enhance its security and defence cooperation "in and with Asia". The ministers acknowledged the overall importance of Asian security to European and global security and stability, and the need for a coordinated approach to the challenges common to Asia and Europe.
This guest lecture focuses on the EU efforts to develop this new, more strategic, more focused, flexible and tailor-made security partnership with countries in Asia and with ASEAN. Strengthened security dialogues, cooperation on crisis management, maritime security and non-traditional threats are some of the priorities. In recent years the EU strengthened its internal defence and security related cooperation mechanisms, and enhanced its ability to run CSDP crisis management missions and operations. This makes the EU a more attractive partner in Asia and increases the perceived mutual benefit of the cooperation. Countries in Asia have shown increased interest in the EU's presence in the region.
Jaap Ora works at the Security and Defence Policy directorate in the European External Action Service in Brussels on security and defence cooperation between the EU and countries in Asia. He has previously worked at the EU Delegation to Kyrgyzstan, in Estonian diplomatic missions in London, Brussels and Baku, and in various positions in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Jaap Ora is a graduate of the Universities of Tartu, Cambridge and Geneva.
The lecture will be held on Monday, 23rd of March at 12:15, Lossi 36-305
