In this joint workshop of the chair of Practical Philosophy and Theoretical Philosophy, distinguished philosophers from both areas will present on their most recent work. Everyone is invited to participate in our philosophical "Oktoberfest". Please get in contact with the organizers if you plan to attend. (The workshop will replace the MA seminar and the department colloquium for that Friday, attendance is obligatory for graduate students of the organizing chairs.)

Jonathan Dancy: "Practical Seemings"

Jonathan Peter Dancy is a British philosopher, working on epistemology and on ethics. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Reading and Professor of Philosophy at University of Texas at Austin. His work has focussed on the role of moral principles (the view known as particularism is his creation), the theory of motivation, and the theory of reasons more in general.
Antti Kauppinen: "From Oughts to Reasons"

Antti Kauppinen is assistant professor at Trinity College Dublin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki in 2008. From 2007-2009 he was a teaching fellow at the University of St. Andrews, and from 2008 also a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests in eithics and political philosophy include philosophical moral psychology, metaethics, well-being, and the foundations of human rights.
Michael Devitt: "What makes a property 'semantic'?"

Michael Devitt is an Australian philosopher currently teaching at the City University of New York in New York City. His primary interests include philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics and epistemology. His current work involves the philosophy of linguistics, foundational issues in semantics, the semantics of definite descriptions and demonstratives, semantic externalism, and scientific realism.
Jussi Haukioja: "Reference and deferential dispositions"

Jussi Haukioja is professor of philosophy at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim, and also holds a temporary part-time position as professor of philosophy at the University of Turku, Finland. His main research interests are in philosophy of mind and language, and in philosophical methodology.
